READING AND FILM<\/p>\n

Paul Celan<\/strong><\/a>:<\/strong> \u2018etwas ganz und gar Pers\u00f6nliches\u2018 \u2013 Die Briefe 1934-1970<\/em> (Something Entirely Personal” \u2013 Letters 1934-1970) (Selected, edited and annotated by Barbara Wiedemann\/Suhrkamp)<\/p>\n

Cornelius Hell<\/strong><\/a> will present the book, and
\nBettina Rossbacher<\/strong><\/a> will read from it.<\/p>\n

\u201c691 letters, 330 of them previously unpublished, to 252 recipients, reveal a wealth of previously unknown biographical facts, making it possible to define his poetology more precisely, as well as showing him in his everyday routine.\u201d (Publisher\u2019s note)<\/p>\n

Following this, Susanne Ayoub<\/strong><\/a> will show her film \u201cAntschel\u201d (with Klaus Demus<\/strong><\/a> \/ Sound: Barbara Heller<\/strong>) and give a talk about Klaus Demus and Paul Celan.<\/p>\n

Paul Celan was from the Bukovina, \u201cthe former Habsburg province that has now fallen victim to the loss of history,\u201d as he put it. He was born in 1920 in Czernowitz (Chernivtsi) to a German-speaking Jewish family. The locales of his childhood no longer existed after the Nazi terror. His family was murdered, and he himself was persecuted and imprisoned in a work camp. He escaped death only by good fortune. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAntschel\u201d deals with a homeland in language, the language that was Paul Celan\u2019s only place of refuge.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was this one thing amidst the losses that remained attainable, nearby, not lost: language.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The film is a \u201clandscape film.\u201d City views\u2014pictures from the past\u2014turn up again in present-day Czernowitz. A trip to Sadagora, where Celan\u2019s mother was from, leads to the synagogue and the Jewish cemetery. <\/em>
\nCelan\u2019s path through postwar Vienna. His identity card as a Jewish refugee.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t stay long. I didn\u2019t find what I had hoped to find.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is a landscape film in another sense as well: it visually interprets linguistic images from Celan\u2019s poems.<\/em><\/p>\n

The narrator of the film is Klaus Demus, now 93 years old.
\nDemus met Celan through Ingeborg Bachmann in Vienna and stayed connected to him for a lifetime. <\/em><\/p>\n
