The first nuclear fission had taken place in Germany, interpreted by the physicist Lise Meitner, who had already emigrated by then. It was still unknown how far the development of the German atomic bomb had progressed. At all costs, the American Allies wanted to prevent the Germans from bringing their knowledge to the Russians. Thus, Operation Epsilon was set in motion.<br \/>\nFor six months, the ten men were held at the English country estate Farm Hall, where every conversation they had was secretly recorded and transcribed \u2014 later published as the <em data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"747\">Farm Hall Transcripts<\/em>. At Farm Hall, the German nuclear scientists learned of the American atomic bombings.
